My 2018 photo printers over £700 buying guide...

It is sometimes expected from a specialist or at least a professional to give a definite opinion on his choices. It is often what you're asking me for. Well don't expect me to choose for you in this page because it seems quite complicated to me: yes, we're lucky enough to have a broad choice between these two printers brands that are Canon and Epson (in alphabetical order!).
However, I am going to do my "job" by selecting in their respective range the printers that seem most adapted to a photo use...

A3+ photo printers
more than £600.00
  A2 photo printers
more than £1000.00

My purchasing advice

Printing thinness is here for both brands, CANON and EPSON, wide gamuts as well so I would choose:

EPSON for its roll paper print (panoramic photography) and EPSON's "experience" of more than ten years;
CANON for its ink Chroma Optimizer that is supposed to splatter transparent ink even in the white parts of the photo, where there could be differences of reflections with the other zones of the print.

Anyway, both products are excellent...

1 - A3+ more than £500 professional photo printers... - Updated

Finally, we're entering the world of best printing quality, with a good printing size moreover (A3+) since it is now pigment-based ink...

I picked three photo printers that gather all technical improvements: printing thinness, number of cartridges and ink quality... and a lot more.

Canon Pro-10 - £520   Epson SC-P600 - £700   Canon Pro-1 - Disc.

CANON Pixma Pro-10

£521.99

My opinion about this Canon Pro-10

This is the same printer as the Pro-100 but in pigment ink this time. This is the minimum price to print in A3 + size pigment at Canon. We are really in the very good quality of printing with the possibility of selling its prints since the inks are pigmentary. And nothing to spoil, the printer is very well made, quiet and most importantly, it has as many print heads as ink cartridges; Conclusion: unlike Epson, there is no need to purge blacks from a print on matte paper to glossy paper. Saving inks guarantees! - Read Amazon Buyer Reviews

My rating: 9,75 / 10 - I obviously recommend this new reference signed Epson even if the black purge is still in the program when you go from a matte paper Glossy paper. But on matte papers, blacks have never been so deep. Beautiful...

Technical specifications of the Canon Pro-10

High-capacity cartridges,

Wide gamut.

Epson SC-P600 printer

EPSON SC-P600

£620.70

My opinion about this Epson SC-P600

Epson's A3 + pigment photo model for the passionate amateur photographer and of course for the professional has been further improved. In the program DMax record on paper "Glossy" (not really visible) and "Mat" (new quality) and gamut a bit bigger. Calibrate imperatively!
Once calibrated, the color and black and white prints are very faithful to the screen and the generic profiles are not completely on the street so usable but the great strength of this new printer is the improvement of the depth of the black, especially on matte papers... - Read Amazon Buyer Reviews

Ma note : 9,75 / 10 - I obviously recommend this new Epson signed reference even if the black purge is still in the program when you switch from a matte paper Glossy paper. But on matte papers, blacks have never been so deep. Beautiful...

Another suggestion: the great strength of this printer SC-P600 is of course the depth of its black on matte or textured papers on the other hand in color and glossy papers or barytes, we can legitimately prefer the Canon Pro-1 below

Technical specifications of the Epson SC-P600

Canon Pro-1 printer

CANON Pro-1

Discontinued

My opinion about this Canon Pro-1

Compared to the printers mentioned above, we gain two additional ink cartridges for perfect black & white prints ... but still no roll printing for the panoramic format. However, we are really in the very - very - good quality of printing in A3 + format. This printer excels on so-called glossy papers - glossy or barytes -. And what about its mode Black & white, the best tested so far, its manufacturing quality or even its softness and quiet operation. On the other hand, this Canon Pro-1 sins by the depth of the blacks on matte papers, in particular in front of the Epson SC-P600 below and the absence of printing on papers in roll (panoramic) - Read Amazon Buyer Reviews

My rating: 9.25 / 10 - Even if Epson is still the leader in this market, this Canon is to study closely, especially if you print on glossy papers / barytes, if you print a lot in black & white, always on the same papers and if, jointly, you do not have a connection with the panoramic format. I had a real crush on this printer!

Another suggestion : if you love to print on matte and textured papers then you will surely prefer the Epson SC-P600, its direct competitor who will offer black even more dense on this type of papers. For color or Glossy papers, I prefer the Canon.

My opinion about this Epson SC-P800

We really have a great printing quality here with the possibility to sell your prints in a great A2 format since the inks are pigment-based. If you like "matte" papers, you need the A2 printer - Read Amazon Buyer Reviews

Canon Pro-1000 printer

CANON Pro-1000

£1,034.80

My opinion about this Canon Pro-1000 - New !

It's not complicated: I have not seen so beautiful color prints and black and white on papers called "brilliant" or barytes and the most incredible, without calibration! Beautiful! Superb gradations, a richness of tones in the darker parts of B & W prints on bar papers - as on the screen - and superlative modeling. High class. To this, add a manufacturing quality above the lot and no vibration when printing. Well, of course, it has some flaws on which we can put a noisy impression because of the new suction system of the sheet of paper and two other regrets that will not necessarily make you forget its immense qualities: the prints B & W on matte papers missing a bit of DMax compared to the new Epson SC-Pxxx printers (lies between a Canon Pro-1 and the new Epson SC-P800) clearly above on this criterion and the lack of roll paper holders. - Read Amazon Buyer Reviews

My rating: 9.75 / 10 - If you print on "glossy" papers (glossy, semi-gloss or baryta) and you like the beautiful black and white but still on these same papers then you have found the new reference, beautiful, really. My favorite !

Another suggestion : The Epson SC-P800 is more versatile (roll printing for panoramic) and has a real strong point with its deep blacks on matte papers but remains, I think, less "great" on Glossy or baryta paper.

This website is almost entirely free and yet almost free of ads. Why? Because they look so bad! It is lucrative though, and enables many websites to keep on living. So I asked myself: what can I do? To keep on developing this website, I'm going to need a regular income just like everyone else. How can I keep on giving access to free information like I've been doing since April 2002?

And I finally found the answer: affiliation. Every time you click on a link from this site to one of my partners' shops, they know you've been referred by me and give me a small percentage on your purchase, be it something I recommend on my website or anything else. Remember to use my links when you shop on these sites! It doesn't cost you anything and it's a win-win deal – for me, them, and you!
